St. David's Veterinary Clinic, CANADA

Description of Elective Experience

We’re a community-focused small-animal clinic in Niagara-on-the-Lake, offering everything from wellness care to dentistry and surgery. Our team values client education, strong medicine, and a supportive, positive work environment. We enjoy helping externs work through cases from start to finish so they can build confidence and grow their clinical skills.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

The clinic is staffed by a supportive small-animal veterinary team and equipped with in-house diagnostic tools including X-ray, ultrasound, bloodwork, urinalysis, and fecal testing. We offer a full range of medical and surgical services such as spays/neuters, dental procedures, soft-tissue surgery, and select orthopedic or specialty surgeries. The hospital also provides comprehensive preventive care; annual exams, vaccinations, heartworm/Lyme testing, senior wellness, nutrition counseling, and microchipping, giving externs exposure to a wide variety of cases and hands-on learning opportunities.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be present for approximately 40 hours per week, typically following the clinic’s regular weekday schedule. They will primarily shadow veterinarians and technicians but are encouraged to assist with patient care, diagnostics, and basic procedures when appropriate.
