Description of Elective Experience
  • We are a mixed animal Veterinary Clinic located in a rural Ashland, Ohio.
  • We provide in-clinic appointments, at home euthanasias, farm calls, haul-in large animal services, and small animal hospitalization.
  • No emergency service is provided by the clinic for small animal, however we have a local clinic about 30 minutes away who provides urgent care until 10pm. We will send true emergencies to one of several referral ER clinics within 45-60 minutes of our hospital.
  • Student can experience and assist in a wide variety of treatments and types of cases including minor surgical procedures if student feels comfortable.
  • We have 3 doctors who have been practicing for variable amounts of time and experiences.
  • We feel it is important to mentor future veterinarians and show them how things operate in a clinical setting.
  • We do work for the local non-profit feline shelter
  • We will have the students shadow at first and then do some appointments while overseeing them depending on student comfort level.

Our staff consists of the following:

  • 3 doctors supported by 3 RVTs and 6 veterinary assistants (some of which are currently in tech school).

  • 4 Customer Service Representatives

  • DR Radiology & Dental radiology
  • Isoflurane Anesthetic machines
  • 2 ultrasound machines (one in-house and one for on-farm calls)

  • Full Idexx lab (Catalyst, Procyte, Sedivue, snaps, etc)
  • Pulse cloud based PIMS
  • Centrifuge
  • Microscope
  • Pan-optic and Pan-Otic
  • Dental machine
  • Power Floats - Equine Dentistry
  • Membership to VIN
  • Surgical laser
  • Therapy Laser
  • Phovia light therapy

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student responsibilities depends on students comfort level. Responsiblities can include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical Exams - small and large animal
  • Vaccinations - small and large animal
  • Case work-up for sick animals

We are open Monday 8am-7pm, Tuesday-Friday 8am-6pm and Saturdays 8am-1pm.

The student could participate during all hours clinic is open, including in-house appointments and on-farm calls.

Student would need to bring appropriate clothing for farm calls.
