Spring Meadow Veterinary Clinic (Ashland, OH)

Description of Elective Experience
  • Mixed Animal Experience: We are a rural mixed animal veterinary clinic in Ashland, Ohio, with a primary focus on small animal medicine and opportunities to experience large animal practice.
  • Varied Clinical Services: Students can gain exposure to in-clinic appointments, small animal hospitalization, at-home euthanasia, farm calls, and select haul-in large animal services.
  • Wide Variety of Cases: Students have the opportunity to observe and assist with a variety of medical and surgical cases, including minor surgical procedures, based on their experience, interests, and comfort level.
  • Hands-On Learning: Students begin by shadowing our veterinary team and learning how cases are managed in a clinical setting. As their confidence and experience develop, students may participate in appointments, physical examinations, treatments, and procedures under veterinary supervision.
  • Shelter Medicine Opportunities: We work with a local nonprofit feline shelter, providing students with opportunities to participate in routine feline surgeries and gain additional hands-on surgical experience.
  • Mentorship: We are committed to mentoring future veterinarians and helping students understand the day-to-day realities of veterinary practice, from patient care and case management to client communication and clinical decision-making.
  • Emergency & Referral Experience: While we do not provide after-hours small animal emergency care, students can learn how cases requiring urgent or emergency treatment are triaged and referred. A local urgent-care clinic is available until 10 PM, and true emergencies are referred to regional emergency/referral hospitals approximately 45–60 minutes away.
