SouthPark Animal Clinic, CO

Attention:

The Colorado Workers' Compensation Act requires student interns to be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Ohio State is not able to add students to its institutional workers' compensation policy. Prior to scheduling an externship in Colorado, students must work with their externship supervisor to ensure that Colorado worker's compensation insurance requirements will be met. Proof of worker's compensation coverage must be sent to Dr. Emma Read for verification. If a student is not covered by a worker's compensation policy for their externship they will not earn academic credit for the rotation. Description of Elective Experience

SouthPark Animal Clinic is a high-volume general practice located in Littleton, Colorado. We provide comprehensive preventative care, medical and surgical services, as well as behavioral consultations for our clients and their pets. Our goal is to empower clients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their pets’ well-being, while supporting them throughout every stage of care.

Externs will work alongside our experienced doctors to develop hands-on surgical and medical skills, as well as strong client communication abilities. This externship is designed to help students further their clinical confidence and prepare for success as future Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVMs). We also strive to accommodate and support special interests when possible, depending on availability and opportunities during the externship.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our facility is continually growing and advancing alongside modern veterinary medicine as we expand our clinical capabilities. We are equipped with digital dental radiography, digital radiography, ultrasound, and tonometry, allowing our team to provide high-quality diagnostics and comprehensive patient care.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be present in the clinic a minimum of four days per week from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays are not required but may be added if the student wishes to gain additional experience. Students will shadow all doctors, with the Medical Director serving as their primary point of contact.

Externs will actively participate in appointments, surgery, and anesthesia to gain hands-on experience and exposure to real-world veterinary practice. Students will also assist in developing treatment plans, forming medical diagnoses, and interpreting radiographs, including dental and standard imaging.

In addition, students will practice essential technical skills such as intravenous catheter placement (IVC), venipuncture, and injection techniques to further build clinical confidence.
