South Loup Veterinary Clinic (Ravenna, NE)

Description of Elective Experience

South Loup Vet clinic is a rural mixed animal practice that is 40% cow/calf and backgrounders,  10% small ruminant, 20% equine and, 30% small animal. In August - September we see mostly small animals and are doing early preg checks by ultrasound on cows and heifers, with some cow calf clients beginning their weaning the last weekend of August. We see horses with dental floats this time of year and being rural, we take our own client/patient emergencies for both large and small animals so students are likely to see those as well. Of course routine companion animal exams and vaccines are constant. The goal being for the student to see a variety of veterinary medicine while also understanding how vital a rural veterinary practice can be to a small community and surrounding ones as well as the importance of being accessible to the farmer/ranchers in our area.

They will be responsible for doing records keeping and charting with oversight from lead veterinarian on case as well as follow up calls for patients following surgery or internal medicine cases. But they will also be introduced to the software and running equipment because it can be different depending on where you practice. They will help with restocking and clean up from time to time.
