Attention:
The Colorado Workers' Compensation Act requires student interns to be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Ohio State is not able to add students to its institutional workers' compensation policy. Prior to scheduling an externship in Colorado, students must work with their externship supervisor to ensure that Colorado worker's compensation insurance requirements will be met. Proof of worker's compensation coverage must be sent to Dr. Emma Read for verification. If a student is not covered by a worker's compensation policy for their externship they will not earn academic credit for the rotation. The student would have the opportunity to shadow multiple veterinarians. We are a mix of general practice and emergency/urgent care, and are open 7 days a week. We perform elective, emergency and orthopedic surgery at our hospital 4 days a week, while other DVMs are in appointments, so a student has an opportunity to learn from multiple veterinarians on each day.
Students are expected to shadow a veterinarian 40 hours in a week. Days of the week can be determined based on student preference and what days would provide the best learning opportunity. Students are expected to show up on time and help with technical responsibilities if there is a need for support, but most of the expectation is shadowing.
