TSVC is a high volume, fast paced clinic that acts as both a general practice and a secondary referral and emergency center.
Over the course of your students 2 - 4 weeks at TSVC, we will have them shadowing doctors and participating in our clinic’s daily practices. They will rotate through general practice, surgery, emergency, and our spay/neuter clinic during their time here. They will help perform physical exams, create treatment plans and anesthesia protocols, perform vaccines and treatments, and take part in clinic rounds under the direction of the doctor they are assigned to shadow for the day. They will also get to observe and experience some of our unique treatment options such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Ozone therapies.
We generally have 5-7 doctors working each day on shift seeing 60-70 general practice appointments, performing between 8-18 surgeries a day, or working our emergency and critical care shift treating an average of 20-30 patients daily. All of our doctors stay up to date on current medical techniques and treatments with open viewpoints to new and changing medicine. Our doctors are friendly and outgoing, and love to answer questions, teach and share cases with you. Our reception and technician staff are fantastic, with the majority made up of seasoned assistants and CVT’s. Our hospital is progressive and integrative with Ultrasound, Endoscopy, CT, Digital Radiograph capabilities, as well as on the cutting edge with a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and ozone therapies available for the best care of our patients.
Students will be timely (recommend to arrive 10 minutes early) and come dressed in scrubs appropriate for a hospital setting. Students are expected and encouraged to actively engage in cases and ask alot of questions, as this is the best way to learn! The externship will be made up of four, 12 hour shifts (Monday - Thursday). While most doctors work through their lunch break (ER and SX doctors don’t have a scheduled break and just find spare time throughout their shift), you are still welcome to take a lunch break as is policy by SAVMA. We recommend that you bring a coat with you, in case the hospital becomes too cold for you.
Students are expected to treat all staff and clients with appropriate respect and will be treated with such by staff in return. If a student has concerns about anything, they are expected and encouraged to speak to their doctor that day, the extern director, or hospital management as soon as possible.
