Sarasota Equine Veterinary Services, FL

Description of Elective Experience

During this elective experience, the student will shadow a mobile equine veterinarian in an ambulatory practice setting. The student will observe and assist (as appropriate) with routine and urgent farm calls, including wellness examinations, vaccinations, lameness evaluations, dentistry, wound care, and emergency procedures. The student will gain exposure to field diagnostics and treatments while learning how veterinary care is adapted to varied farm environments without the use of a fixed clinic.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will participate in a few pre determined week day dates that the doctor is available for no more than an 8 hour shift. The student will be able to observe and assist (as appropriate) with patient handling and restraint, preparation of equipment and supplies, basic record keeping, and maintenance of biosecurity protocols. The experience will also emphasize professional communication, as the student will observe client interactions, treatment discussions, and medical decision-making in real time. This elective is designed to provide hands-on observational learning, reinforce safety practices, and offer practical insight into the daily responsibilities and workflow of a mobile equine veterinarian.
