Rolling Hills Veterinary Service (Cascade, IA)

Description of Elective Experience

We are a private 6 doctor practice with 3 locations in Northeast Iowa that offers 90% large animal (beef cattle, dairy cattle, small ruminants, some horses, and swine) and 10% small animal. We offer 3 fully equipped clinics, with in-house laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, surgical suites, cattle haul-in facilities and surgical pens. Students will be expected to work with veterinarians in clinic with companion animal appointments and surgeries as well as working with livestock in-house. We are an ambulatory clinic as well, with mobile vet units, and students will be expected to participate in farm calls.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Multiple veterinary textbooks, Plumbs online available. Equipment includes: in-house laboratory (IDEXX - CBC/Chem/UA), BF and PC Microscopy with LCD screen. Dentistry units, isoflurane anesthesia machines with anesthetic monitoring equipment, Milk culture, 5 easi-scan ultrasounds, digital radiography, 6 fully-equipped vet trucks with Bowie units. Mobile hydraulic chutes, in-house hydraulic chutes at all locations with a tilt chute in the Cascade office.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be expected to be present during normal business hours: M-F 8:00 - 5:00, Saturdays 8-12. After-hours Emergency Calls with the Drs is encouraged but not required. Students will always be under direct supervison of a veterinarian and will be encouraged to participate in day-to-day veterinary work to the best of their comfort and skill level.
