Rodgers Veterinary Services, GA

Description of Elective Experience

Students are allowed to see all work alongside our vets in our 4 vet clinic that is walk in. We see all types of animals and do emergencies services. Students are allowed to help with wellness, sick examinations, emergencies, and surgeries. Located 20 minutes outside of Augusta, Georgia and within 1.5 hour drive to referral center, we see everything from wellness visit, traumas, sick patients, and a moderate portion of large animal (both in clinic and on farm).

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have a 4 vet clinic with digital radiography, ultrasound, 1 surgical suit, 1 dental station, 2 examination rooms, on site blood machines and reference laboratories, boarding and grooming facilities. We also have 2 mobile large animal trucks that are fully stocked with digital radiographs, power floats, and other necessities for on farm use. We are walk-in (except for surgeries) and we generally see between 30-75 patients per day.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to work 40 hours per week alongside one of our vets. Participate in physical examinations, diagnosis, and treatment plans. Practice useful skills of diagnostics and work with our assistants and technicians on basic skills. If the student wants more hands on learning on the farm there is opportunity to have on farm experience (bovine, equine, small ruminant, camelids, and some exotics) as well. We generally do surgery 4-5 days per week, so surgical time is also available depending on the schedule/week.
