Description of Elective Experience

Elective experience is regulatory racetrack medicine. It involves lameness extensively along with some medicicine and possibly emergency medicine. Drug testing in the test barn will be a part of this experience also. It is 5 days a week for approximately 6 hours/day and slightly more when drug testing is being involved, as it tends to run another 90 minutes after the races are over. This will occur at Miami Valley Racetrack near Cincinnati Ohio

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

I am a fully equipped ambulatory veterinarian with radiograph equipment, endoscope, and all other emergency medical equipment to deal with anything that may occur during races and the situations that arise

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student should arrive an hour before races at which time observation and judgement regarding lameness will occur and will continue for 14 races per night. Time span is generally 3:30-9 or 10:00 every night Sunday-Thursday. If there is an emergency assisting with treating a horse would occur.
