Description of Elective Experience

Our four-doctor mixed animal practice sees a mixture of cats, dogs and horses. The student may ride along on farm calls, assist in seeing horses in the clinic as well as have the opportunity to assist in a mixture of rooms for small animals for illness, injury and regular check ups. The student may also assist and shadow or assist in surgery for small animal or with standing procedures with equine. Our practice has a varied client base from all walks of life and we are located roughly an hour from OSU in a rural suburb of Dayton, OH. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.
  • Our medical director Dr. Patrick Foth did one of his surgical residencies at OSU for equine surgery and is a board certified equine surgeon. 
  • One of our part-time veterinarians was the previous board president and board member of OVMA and still helps to confer on issues brought up and continues to be an excellent reference source for not only our hospital but improving veterinary legislation across the state. 
  • Our full-time small animal veterinarian Dr. Hudson started her career as an equine vet, and then since transitioned to small animal and can speak to the differences in daily duties and expectations between both roles if a student is unsure. 
  • Another one of our part-time veterinarians Dr. Ryckman has owned multiple of her own practices and has very in-depth knowledge of opening and running your own hospitals. 
  • Our staff consists of very knowledgeable technicians and VAs with overall higher tenure than average.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • Student will be responsible for assisting in medical examinations both in the clinic as well as out in the field on small and large animals. 
  • Student will be responsible for charting medical records, communicating patient-based recommendations and care as well as following up with clients on cases when needed. 
  • Students will participate in daily discussions with supervising veterinarians about cases 
  • Students will be allowed to assist in surgeries where applicable 
  • Students will develop diagnostic plans on cases in conjunction with supervising veterinarians.
