Description of Elective Experience

The Pine City Animal Hospital is a busy small animal hospital/clinic in Pine County, MN.  The candidate would directly shadow the veterinarian and would be encouraged to submit recommendations for treatment plans and other care.  Questions and discussion would be encouraged.  The candidate would have opportunities to scrub in and assist in surgery.  Laboratory and clinical skills would be honed. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Staff-3 technicians, 2 receptionists, currently 1 veterinarian, 1 office manager (our associate veterinarian had to retire recently due to health issues so we are hiring)

Equipment-- monitors, IV pumps, in-house chem/CBC/electrolytes/blood gas, ultrasound, radiology, advanced dental equipment (in-house root canals), surgical laser, surgical equipment for extra-cap cruciate and orthopedic pinning, tonopen

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Hours Open:  M-F 8-5, Sat 8-noon plus emergencies

The student would be encouraged to work at least 40 hours.  Additonal hours and emergencies would be optional unless required by the university.  The student would be encouraged to participate in as much as allowed by law without a veterinary license.  Dr. Webster would encourage the students'  input on cases, and discussion would be one-on-one daily.
