Description of Elective Experience

Veterinary students will rotate amongst the field and hospital clinicians at Piedmont observing, assisting, and performing clinical skills as appropriate and dictated by the supervising veterinarian. The clinic provides a well rounded experience, having access to most specialists (on staff or visiting) as well as heavy GP and sports medicine case loads in the heart of horse country. Equine disciplines seen are mostly English with some flat and steeplechase racing and occasional Western disciplines. Students work about 40 hours Monday to Friday with opportunities for additional experience after hours present but not required.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Four full time LVTs and 8-10 veterinary assistants on staff. Full front office and pharmacy staff. 8 full portable radiology units, 8 portable ultrasounds and one large hospital ultrasound, standing CT (distal limb only), nuclear scintigraphy, arthroscopic tower, laparoscopic surgical equipment, full surgical suite with two drop stalls, multiple endoscopes and gastroscopes, full hospital with isolation stalls, ECC-residency trained doctor, two surgeons, one Theriogenologist, visiting dentistry-residency trained, Imed, and ophtho specialists.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Expected to shadow and participate hands-on, if appropriate, with clinicians in the hospital or on the road Monday to Friday 8/9 AM to 5 PM. Encouraged but not required to attend weekend hospital patient rounds and after hours emergencies (weeknights and weekends). No treatment duty requirements but students may offer to help to technicians at any time if they desire.
