Five student externs will be working with four seasoned small animal veterinarians daily on case work ups as well as small animal soft tissue surgery (canine and feline spay and neuter) and dentistry (cadaver work as well as live animal). Each day live patients will be coming from local animal shelters for either surgery or exams/diagnostics that the externs will perform. The goal is for each extern to have two cases a day (surgical or medical) to work through. The goal of the program will be to elevate surgical/dental, specifically dental extraction, confidence as well as increase comfort in anesthetic planning and delivery. Additionally, attendees will work on client communication by working directly with our shelter partners on sick animal case work ups. There will also be educational sessions on nutrition (presented by Hill's DVMs) as well as heart disease and diabetes given by specialists from BI.
The training center is a brand new facility located in Addison Illinois, that has state of the art radiology, ultrasound and surgical equipment as well as full anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring capabilities. There is also in house Idexx lab equipment for CBC/Chemistry and urinalysis as well as cytology. There will be 4 DVMs present everyday throughout the externship for support. This is not a functioning hospital, it is strictly a training facility, so all attention and focus is on supporting the externs. We will also have certified veterinary technicians (4) working with us as well as veterinary assistants (4). As mentioned, we will also have Hill's DVMs and Boehringer Ingleheim DVMs as a resource as well.
Most days of the externship will run 8 am to 4 pm, with the last day running 8 am to 2 pm. The externship starts on a Friday, and ends the following Friday, with the weekend off (6 days total). The extern will always have a DVM with them in surgery/dentistry (no more than 3 surgeries run at a time and we have 4 DVMs). If they are working up a case, they will have a DVM to help facilitate their plan.
