Description of Elective Experience

Students are involved in both hospital and ambulatory appointments. They are allowed to assist with procedures and treatments under direct supervision of a veterinarian as deemed appropriate. Students are also able to scrub in for surgeries, assist with anesthesia and hospital patient care. Students with interest may also observe and assist in our equine and/or canine rehabilitation centers on site. Students are encouraged to join veterinarians on after hours emergencies both in the field an in the hospital. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

7 veterinarians (including 2 interns which live on site), 6 veterinary assistants, plus support staff. 

1 veterinary surgeon, 2 acupuncture certifications, 1 chiropractic certification, 1 canine sports medicine boarded veterinarian. 

2 mobile xray units, 5 ultrasound units, arthroscopy, gastroscopy, airway endoscopy, MRI, Shockwave, Laser, underwater treadmill (both equine and canine).

Weekly journal club meetings.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

5 day work week 8:30-5pm M-F. Students are assigned to shadow one veterinarian for the day and observe appointments. Hands on experience encouraged as student and cases allow.

After hours on call participation encouraged. Assisting interns with hospital patient care encouraged. Our clinic is open for emergencies 24/7.
