Pet Health Centers at North Shore Animal League America, NY

Description of Elective Experience

We offer 2 and 4 week programs for veterinary students, 40 hrs per week. Each day the student is assigned to a different veterinarian to shadow for the day, and they rotate throughout the different areas of the hospital, including outpatient/clinic appointments, exams for hospitalized patients, shelter medicine, dentals and one day of surgery per week. If the student is in their clinical year of study, they are able to participate in exams by taking history, pulling blood, administering vaccines, and helping the doctors update treatment plans. They are also allowed to perform supervised spay and neuter surgeries during their scheduled surgery day. If the student is not in their clinical year of study, they are still welcome to join us, but their experience would be limited to observation only.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have about 14 doctors on staff that students cycle working with and about on 70 tech/va support staff across the campus. I am not a doctor myself so I cannot speak to the exact equipment we have, but broad strokes- we have 7 isolation wards on campus, an O2 tank in our rehab ward, also a dental suite where we can perform xrays, extractions and cleaning. Our surgery suite has 4 tables where we perform spay/neuters, a small amount of ortho procedures (FHOs, TTA, MPL, fracture repairs etc), and several different soft tissue procedures (lumpectomies, MGT removals etc). We perform surgeries Monday-Friday on both shelter and owned pets.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Our most common program is definitely the 2 week externship, the first week spanning from Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm with an hour break for lunch. The second week is typically Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm to allow for travel on the weekends. However, we are happy to work with the student's availability. If the student is in their clinical year of study, they are able to assist the doctors by taking history, pulling blood, administering vaccines, assisting in updating treatment plans and performing spay and neuter procedures. If they are not in their clinical year, they are limited to observation only.
