Pet Derm: Allergy, Skin, and Ears Specialists (Chicago, IL)

Description of Elective Experience

Pet Derm: Allergy, Skin, and Ear Specialists provides veterinary students with a comprehensive, hands-on experience in a busy referral dermatology practice. Externs work directly alongside board-certified veterinary dermatologists, participating in the evaluation and management of a wide variety of skin and ear disorders, including allergic dermatitis, chronic otitis, autoimmune diseases, infectious skin conditions, alopecia disorders, and complex referral cases. Students gain experience performing and interpreting dermatologic diagnostics such as cytology, skin scrapings, trichograms, biopsies, and otoscopic examinations while developing diagnostic and treatment plans through case discussions with clinicians. In addition to clinical training, externs observe client communication, long-term disease management strategies, advanced procedures, and specialty practice operations. This elective is designed to strengthen clinical reasoning, diagnostic skills, and confidence in dermatology while providing valuable mentorship for students interested in specialty medicine or pursuing a career in veterinary dermatology.
