Description of Elective Experience

Dentistry and Oral Surgery

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Senior Staff: DVM/DAVDC; DVM/Residency trained awaiting to sit for boards; DVM/DACVAA; VTS (Dentistry)

Equipment: Nomad and Progeny dental radiography; CBCT; Piezotome; Skeletal X-ray system; Beaverstate Dental delivery units

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Schedule

  • Monday-Friday  
    • Monday/Tuesday/Thursday are SX days
      • You should arrive at 7:45 on SX days to participate in rounds 
    • Wednesdays are appointment only days
      • You should arrive at 8 on these days
    • Fridays are not a “set” day and attendance varies based on Dr. Gingerich’s schedule. These days are wet lab days that you will work on cadavers if the schedule allows. 
      • Arrival times may vary based on Dr. Gingerich’s schedule but are usually between 8 – 9:30
  • The time you will finish each day will vary based on how involved the surgeries are and caseload

Dress Code and Food

  • Scrubs
    • Solid colored scrubs only please, no patterns
  • Bring snacks, lunch, drinks, etc.…
    • Publix and multiple “fast” food type restaurants are within a 5-minute drive of the clinic if you would prefer to leave to grab lunch vs. packing

Expectations

    • Be present in the exam room with Dr. Gingerich
    • Assist with patient preparation for surgery
    • Observe dental charting and oral exam in week one, perform oral exam and charting in week two
    • Observe proper techniques for obtaining dental radiographs
    • Observe cleaning techniques in week one, perform cleaning in week two
    • Assist Dr. Gingerich in surgery
    • Assist with patient recovery
    • You are not required to clean up
