Perrinville Animal Hospital (Edmonds, WA)

Description of Elective Experience

This externship provides veterinary students with hands-on exposure to the daily operations of a small animal general practice. Externs will observe and participate in patient examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatment planning, and client communication under the supervision of licensed veterinarians. The experience includes exposure to preventive care, internal medicine cases, surgery, dentistry, and basic diagnostics such as laboratory testing and imaging. Students will have the opportunity to assist the medical team, practice clinical reasoning, and gain insight into the workflow of a community small animal hospital. Our goal is to provide a supportive learning environment that encourages questions, discussion of cases, and development of practical veterinary skills.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our hospital is a small animal general practice staffed by licensed veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and client service representatives who work collaboratively to provide high-quality patient care. The practice is equipped with in-house laboratory supplies, digital radiography, ultrasound, surgical suite, anesthesia monitoring equipment, and electronic medical records. Externs have the opportunity to learn directly from the veterinary team through case discussions, observation, and supervised participation in diagnostic and treatment procedures. The hospital provides a supportive learning environment where students can ask questions, review cases, and gain practical experience with common small animal medical and surgical conditions.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Externship students are expected to participate in the daily activities of the hospital during regular business hours, approximately 8 hour days, 5 days per week depending on the student’s schedule and school requirements. Students will primarily shadow veterinarians and the medical team while also assisting with appropriate tasks under supervision. Responsibilities may include observing and assisting with physical exams, diagnostic procedures, treatments, surgical and dental procedures, patient restraint, and basic patient care. Students are encouraged to actively engage in case discussions, ask questions, and participate in client communication when appropriate. Professional behavior, punctuality, and adherence to hospital safety and confidentiality policies are expected at all times.
