Description of Elective Experience

Performance Equine Associates (PEA) provides full service primary care, surgical, diagnostic, and referral services for southern Oklahoma and north Texas. The primary caseload is lameness/sports medicine and advanced reproduction. The practice includes two boarded surgeons and 3 other veterinarians that perform reproduction, lameness, general practice, and anesthesia. Western Performance horses are the primary discipline that is seen at PEA.

Externs are encouraged to observe all examinations and surgical procedures performed. Lameness examination, ophthalmic exams, neurologic exams, radiographic exams and endoscopic exams are commonly performed daily on an outpatient basis. There are also opportunities to visit many ranches on ambulatory calls, if room in the car is available. Ambulatory calls consist of general practice, reproduction work, and emergencies.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • Externs should be present no later than 8 am to assist with morning barn treatments.
  • The time we end our day varies quite a bit, as does our lunch routine. It is best to bring lunch and some snacks with you for the day.
  • The working day is completed when the last appointment/surgery/barn case has been finished. This is typically around 5:30-6 pm.
  • Externs may break for lunch at his/her discretion. It is recommended to break for lunch in between appointments and surgery, so not to miss important learning experiences.
  • Externs staying at the clinic should be present and assist with night treatments.
  • Externs NOT staying at the clinic may be asked to assist or perform night treatments.
  • Externs need to visit with the office to determine the start time and responsibilities required.
  • Externs should be flexible in their availability. They may be asked to assist with weekends and some holidays.
  • Emergency schedule
  • Emergencies are seen weeknights from 5 pm to 8 am the following morning and on weekends from 5 pm Friday evening to 8 am Monday morning.
  • Externs are encouraged to be on-call for all clinic emergencies seen after hours.      
  • If an emergency is expected, the intern or doctor will notify the extern using the provided contact number.
  • Externs should supply a contact number to be used. The contact number should be written down on the dry easer board in the lab/pharmacy area.
  • Externs are encouraged to assist with evening and overnight treatments. This may include but are not limited to ophthalmic treatment, feedings, intravenous fluid monitoring, etc.
