Peregrine Radiology, ME

Description of Elective Experience

Student: minimum of 2 per rotation, maximum of 4.

Duration: 2 weeks (Monday to the following Friday). Most students arrive the Sunday before the first Monday of the rotation

Radiology imaging opportunities include daily rounds (1-3 hours/day) on basic and advanced radiographs, CT and ultrasound. Ultrasound cases include echocardiographic and non-echo ultrasound (e.g., abdomen, nonecho-thoracic). These rounds are case based and include emergency imaging considerations.

Practical hands-on ultrasound imaging instruction is performed everyday (1-2 hours/day) on the 4 family dogs.

One set of rounds (2 hours) will be expressly on ECG interpretation presented by ACVECC specialist (Mo)

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

There is a full time ultrasound machine with 3 transducers and echocardiography positioning table available.

4 family dogs are available for daily ultrasound imaging

Family includes boarded specialists in Radiology (Bob) and Emergency Critial Care (Mo)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to have their own transportation (rental or personally owned car); we live in rural location and "uber-like" transportation is not available.

Students are expected to review classnotes or reading references prior to each day's rounds and practical ultrasound imaging topics.

Students are expected to be able to indepently practice ultrasound topics after the instructional component (1-3 hours/day)

Rounds typically begin at 8AM (imaging rounds) and 1 PM (practical US imaging)

The "middle" Saturday the entire group will travel to Portland (1:15 hour drive) for practical ultrasound imaging and emergency case discussions. That clinic starts at 0830 and continues to 12 noon.
