Pembroke Animal Hospital, NH

Description of Elective Experience

Pembroke Animal Hospital is a mixed animal practice with 6 veterinarians.  On any given week day there is usually one veterinarian doing farm calls, one in surgery, and 2-3 in small animal appointments, with one on a day off.  Students are allowed to shadow any one of the veterinarians and will be allowed to participate in exams and treatments when possible.  Sometimes we can find simple surgery cases to do as well (cat neuters, or even spays).  Safety of the student and the patients is paramount. Questions are always encouraged (perhaps not in front of clients).

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be present when the doctors are, usually from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.  Saturday hours are from 8:30-1 pm, but they are optional.  We do large animal emergencies but do not require students to attend those (unless they want to).  There is much shadowing, but we try to give students the opportunity to participate when possible.
