Pembroke Animal Hospital, NH

Description of Elective Experience

We are a mixed animal practice with 5 veterinarians.  In a usual week, we have 1 doctor on farm calls, 1 in surgery, and 2 in small animal appointments each day, with 1 doctor off.  Students have the opportunity to shadow farm calls, surgery, small animal appointments each day, and can decide what they want to shadow each day.  Having different doctors allows opportunity to observe different techniques. We try to allow students to participate when feasible.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 5 veterinarians with a combined experience of over 60 years of practice.  We have complete in-house lab, ultrasound machine, in-house x-ray and portable x-ray, dental machine. We have anesthesia equipment for small animal, and surgery tables and equipment.  We are fully staffed with technicians and receptionists.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be present when veterinarians are, approximately 8:30-5, Monday through Friday.  We have Saturday morning hours, but those are optional.  If a student is interested in emergency farm calls, he or she is welcome to come along, but it is not required.  There is a lot of shadowing, but we try to let students participate whenever possible.
