Description of Elective Experience

Externship Student Responsibilities

Externship students will gain hands-on clinical experience by assisting veterinary staff and observing daily hospital operations. Students may:

Shadow veterinarians during client appointments, medical workups, and surgical procedures.

Assist in the interpretation of diagnostic tests, including bloodwork, urinalysis, and radiographs.

Support the veterinary team with patient handling, history taking, and medical record documentation as appropriate.

Participate in case discussions and treatment planning to enhance their clinical reasoning skills.

Uphold hospital protocols, maintain a clean and organized work environment, and ensure compassionate care for all patients

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a 2.5 doctor practice, we have digital radiographs, ultrasound, in house laboratory, full spectrum surgical suite including suction and cautery, digital dental radiographs, we are well staffed with 1.5-2 techs and 2 assistants per doctor

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student would be expected to work 40 hours a week, 8 hour shifts, mostly shadowing and collaborating but also assisting in animal restraint/procedures as needed/indicated/wanted
