Otay Pet Vets, CA

Description of Elective Experience

Details of the Externship
Mentorship opportunities and veterinary skills we are excited to share:
Otay Pet Vets is a well established AAHA accredited general practice catering to small companion animals
including exotics. Externs will be able to partner with their mentor and participate in wellness, sick pet,
urgent care and exotic animal exams, client education, elective and soft tissue surgeries, dental
procedures, diagnostic imaging and laboratory interpretation. Doctors will meet weekly for case
management and review. Externs will participate in Journal article readings that will be distributed for
continued learning and training. A detailed orientation will be offered in order to optimize the extern
experience, expectations and goals.
What a day in the hospital will look like for students:
Doctors see up to sixteen 30 minute appointments daily. Each doctor has an assigned surgical day where
the morning is blocked off to perform elective and soft tissue surgeries. During that time, the surgical
doctor will be overseeing several dental procedures. Any open availability in the doctor schedule is
generally filled with same day urgent care appointments. Technicians, in addition to supporting the
doctors, are also performing technician appointments such as vaccinations and nail trims.
