Description of Elective Experience
  • Assists veterinarian and veterinary technicians with animal intake examinations and follow up exams of admitted patients and education animal ambassadors

  • Assists with radiographs and lab specimen collection and interpretation of lab values 

  • Restrains wildlife species for physical examination and treatments 

  • Observes surgical procedures involving anesthesia of wildlife patients 

  • Covers at minimum one four-hour shift/week on our community information line

  • Doses and administers medications; provides nursing care to patients 

  • Performs weekly visual assessment of pre-release facility patients 

  • Responsible for presenting approved research project upon completion of externship and lead two wildlife focused journal club discussions for hospital staff and volunteers 

  • Rotates through animal husbandry areas at the education and pre-release facilities 

  • Maintains constant focus on safe workplace practices 

  • Develops an understanding of and adherence to federal, state and local wildlife policies

  • Personally commits to our Core Values and organizational policies and procedures 

  • Performs additional duties as assigned Necessary Knowledge and Experience 

  • Currently enrolled as a first or second year veterinary student in an accredited veterinary program Strong interest in pursuing a career in wildlife or exotic veterinary medicine
