Description of Elective Experience

Northeast Equine Veterinary Services is a large animal ambulatory practice servicing Ashtabula, Geauga and Trumbull County as well as surrounding areas. With two full-time veterinarians, case-load consists of predominantly equine but also includes a portion of bovine and small ruminant patients. Students should expect to see a case load based heavily on equine reproduction (season depending), equine preventative medicine, castration, minor surgeries as well as lameness and emergencies. Hours will vary depending on caseload and emergencies for the day.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

As a two-doctor ambulatory practice, the practice is equipped with two fully stocked vehicles with both portable x-ray and ultrasound. Northeast Equine Veterinary Services focuses heavily on equine production and offers comprehensive reproductive care including ultrasonography, fetal sexing, artificial insemination, uterine culture, embryo transfer and neonatal care. Our practice is also equipped with power dental floats, limited in-house blood work, and a tilt-table for bovine work.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will accompany veterinarians throughout the day on farm calls, assisting with restraint, treatment plans, patient careand client communication. Student input and discussion is both encouraged and expected throughout the day. Hands-on experience for students will be provided as deemed appropriateand will vary based on the student’s comfortability and skill.Student participation in daily tasks is also highly encouraged including assisting with restocking the truck, preparing samples to be shipped to the lab and preparing for the next day.
