Newport Veterinary Hospital, VT

Description of Elective Experience

We are a rural independently owned, small animal GP practice with a touch of urgent care that cares deeply about our staff, clients and patients. We are a 2 FTE doctor practice with special interests in gentle handling (working on practice Fear Free Certification), dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and exotics (new and developing). We also have many high quality diagnostics.
Our owner loves veterinary medicine and has a strong desire to share a positive practice owning experience. We want to provide hands on experience for medicine, surgery and practice ownership.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have one owner/medical director, me full time veterinarian, and one part time veterinarian, plus regular relief. We will be hiring another full time veterinarian in the fall of 2025.
We have four licensed technicians, one unlicensed technician, four veterinary assistants, two CSR's, a hospital assistant (restocking and cleaning), a remote practice manager and a part-time remote CSR; and a remote administrative assistant. Lastly, we do have a part-time animal chiropractor as well.
We have digital radiology, ultrasound, digital dental radiology, electrocautery, IDEXX in house blood machines, tonovet, and a good case load.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We believe in work life balance and encourage a four day work week as that is the max most of our staff and docs work. We will support a heavier schedule for a short amount of time if the student requests. We are open M-F 8am-5pm, and generally have 1-2 two doctors working with dentistry, technician appointments and surgeries mixed in depending on the day. We want the students to be hands on wherever they are comfortable and will attempt to push them a little out of their comfort zone.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

We have a bedroom, full bath and full kitchen on site. Pet friendly for well behaved pets. No charge for housing while doing an externship.
