Description of Elective Experience

We are 9 doctor AAHA accredited busy general practice that is used to having students. We serve as a core 3rd year site for Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary medicine.  We also host 4th year students from Western University of Health Sciences, Midwestern University, and UC Davis.  

We have been associated with Western University for over 20 years. 

We have one doctor who is ABVP certified as well as one doctor who is DACT certified and about 30% of her caseload is reproduction offering a unique experience in small animal clinical medicine.

9 doctors on staff

44 employees total with multiple RVTs

overnight hospitalization with 24 hour monitoring available

reproduction services offered: semen collection, semen evaluation, semen freezing, transcervical insemination, C-sections, pregnancy exams, ovulation timing (progesterone), reproductive ultrasound, Ovary Sparing Spays, and other reproductive surgeries, etc...

endoscopy

anesthetic dental procedures with digital dental radiography and surgical extractions performed

multitude of soft tissue surgeries performed including but not limited to: OVH, castration, cystotomy, gastric and intestinal foreign body, splenectomy, liver biopsy, dermal / sub-q mass removals including (MCT, Soft Tissue Sarcoma as well as benign masses), etc...

orthopedic procedures can be performed by traveling doctor with DACVS certification

echocardiogram can also be performed by doctor with ACVIM, cardiology certification

mobile CT also occasionally utilized

emergency and critical cases during open hours. 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will be assigned to a doctor each day working through their day with them in the hospital seeing out-patient appointments, hospitalized cases, surgical procedures, etc...

Students will be expected to perform physical exams, come up with differential diagnoses and treatment plans (understanding pharmacokinetics) within the context of clinical practice (limitations from clients and scope of ability of hospital). 

Students will be privy to all client communication

Students will be expected to as much as possible (limited within the scope of clinical practice), go about their day as if they were the doctor

Participation in surgical cases will be expected with actual performing of procedures limited to comfort level of the attending doctor.
