Description of Elective Experience

The student will shadow at a 2 1/2 doctor mixed animal (80% small animal) practice. Under supervision, the student will see a limited number of companion animal patients daily and will perform a surgery (ovariohysterectomy, castration, minor mass excision) and/or dental prophylaxis twice weekly. The student will participate on large animal calls.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Staffing: two full-time DVMs and one part-time DVM; two registered veterinary technicians; two receptionists; two veterinary assistants

Equipment: Surgical laser; x-ray machine; in-house CBC, chemistry analyzer, and urinalysis machine; microscope

Small veterinary library

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student is expected to shadow/work 8-10 hours daily, Monday through Friday. Attendance at Saturday office hours (9am-noon) is optional. Work caseload will depend on both client consent and student ability.
