Murrysville Veterinary Associates, PA

Description of Elective Experience

At our AAHA-accredited practice, veterinary students will work with a team of doctors practicing high-quality small animal medicine in a supportive and collaborative environment.  We value the principles of Fear Free and Cat-Friendly veterinary visits to ensure the best experience for our patients and their owners. We offer a variety of services including wellness care, surgery, dentistry, cold laser therapy, ultrasound, radiography, urgent care, avian/reptile medicine, acupuncture/traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, and end-of-life care. Our goal is to provide veterinary students with a well-rounded approach to practicing high-quality veterinary medicine, surgery, and dentistry in a general practice setting.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our practice is equipped with the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies, including:

  • Digital radiography and dental radiography
  • In-house laboratory and diagnostic services
  • Ultrasound, EKG, and blood pressure monitoring
  • Cold laser therapy
  • Avian and reptile care
  • Acupuncture and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine

Our facility layout is also designed to allow separate cat and dog entrances/exam rooms to employ Fear Free principles throughout our patient's visit.

We maintain a variety of veterinary reference textbooks and online resources that the veterinary student will have access to during their rotation.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We will work with the veterinary student to arrange a schedule for their rotation, with the expectation of a 5-day/40-hour work week. Along with shadowing experiences with each of our veterinarians, we also aim to provide hands-on opportunities for veterinary students to examine patients, outline diagnostic/treatment plans, and perform select technical skills throughout the course of the rotation. Students will also have the opportunity to scrub in to assist with surgeries. During the second week of the rotation, students will be asked to present and discuss an interesting case at our weekly doctor meeting.
