MSPCA-Angell West, MA

Description of Elective Experience

The MSPCA-Angell West, in Waltham, MA, offers 1-6 week externships to interested veterinary students. A wide variety of rotations are available to externs including Avian/Exotic Medicine, Dermatology, Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Urgent Care. Externs are paired with senior veterinary staff and participate in clinics, inpatient case management, cage-side rounds and didactic rounds. If time permits, externs can spend additional time in clinics or shadowing an intern on the emergency service. The goal of our extern program is to provide veterinary students with an opportunity to observe a busy specialty referral medical practice and learn the foundational aspects of hospital practices and procedures.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Angell West's extern program provides a platform to bolster clinical skills, critical thinking, ethics and continued learning. The program also serves as an insider’s look for those interested in pursuing an internship at Angell West. During time at Angell West, externs are welcome to take advantage of weekly virtual continuing education programs. Lectures are presented by the veterinary staff and guests on a wide range of veterinary medicine topics.
