Mohnacky Animal Hospitals, Inc. (Vista, CA)

Description of Elective Experience

Mohnacky Animal Hospitals is a family-owned veterinary organization serving North San Diego County, California, with locations in Vista, Escondido, and Carlsbad. Our corporate office serves as the central administrative contact for the organization. We are also affiliated with Helping Paws Animal Hospital in Anza, California, and partner with the Helping Paws Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting community initiatives and expanding access to affordable veterinary care, including programs benefiting military service members and their families.

Our hospitals offer students a diverse, hands-on clinical learning experience that extends beyond routine wellness and preventive care. Students will have opportunities to work alongside our team of six experienced veterinarians, including a board-certified theriogenologist and a veterinarian certified in acupuncture, both of whom also practice general veterinary medicine. Our clinical services include internal medicine, reproductive medicine, acupuncture, dentistry, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, ultrasound, and post-operative care. While primarily treating dogs and cats, our hospitals also occasionally see exotic/pocket pets, further broadening clinical exposure.

Students will actively participate in daily clinical activities under appropriate supervision, including patient examinations, obtaining medical histories, developing diagnostic and treatment plans, reviewing laboratory and imaging results, documenting medical records, and discussing cases with supervising veterinarians. Depending on their experience and demonstrated competencies, students may also assist with surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring, dental and surgical procedures, treatments, and post-operative patient care.

Our goal is to provide a well-rounded educational experience that strengthens clinical reasoning, practical skills, client communication, and collaboration within a veterinary team. Students will also gain exposure to veterinary practice management software, electronic medical records, and emerging technologies used to support daily clinical operations. Specific learning opportunities and levels of participation will vary based on hospital location, supervising veterinarian, clinical caseload, and the student's educational level and demonstrated competencies.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Mohnacky Animal Hospitals provides a comprehensive clinical learning environment supported by a team of six veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, exam room advocates, client service representatives, hospital management, and administrative support staff. Our veterinary team includes professionals with specialized training and expertise, including a board-certified theriogenologist and a veterinarian certified in acupuncture, providing students with exposure to a variety of clinical approaches and areas of veterinary medicine.

Our hospitals are equipped with examination and treatment areas, surgical suites, anesthesia and patient monitoring equipment, digital radiography, ultrasound machines, dental equipment, in-house laboratory capabilities, and pharmacy resources. These resources support a wide range of diagnostic, medical, and surgical services, including soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, dentistry, reproductive medicine, and the management of diverse medical conditions.

Students will also gain exposure to electronic medical records, veterinary practice management software, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) tools utilized to support clinical documentation, streamline daily workflows, improve operational efficiency, and enhance communication and coordination among veterinary team members. This provides students with insight into how modern veterinary practices integrate technology to support patient care, optimize time management, and allow veterinary professionals to focus more effectively on their patients and clients.

Educational resources include supervised clinical observation, hands-on learning opportunities appropriate to the student's educational level, case discussions, and collaboration with veterinary professionals. Students are encouraged to engage with the veterinary team, ask questions, and develop their clinical knowledge, technical skills, and understanding of hospital operations.

Students may have opportunities to experience different clinical environments, caseloads, veterinary teams, available equipment, specialized services, technologies, and educational opportunities.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, initiative, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to actively participate in the clinical learning environment. Our hospitals operate Monday through Saturday, and students will generally be scheduled for 40 hours per week. Specific days and hours will be determined in advance based on hospital operations, supervising veterinarian availability, and the student's educational requirements.

Students will be encouraged to take an active role in patient care and clinical decision-making under the guidance and supervision of our veterinary team. Depending on their educational level, demonstrated competencies, and applicable regulations, responsibilities and learning opportunities may include:

  • Patient Examinations: Perform or assist with physical examinations, obtain patient histories, assess clinical findings, and communicate observations to the supervising veterinarian.
  • Diagnostic and Treatment Planning: Participate in developing diagnostic and treatment plans, interpreting laboratory results and diagnostic imaging, and discussing clinical recommendations with supervising veterinarians.
  • Medical Records and Client Communication: Assist with documenting medical records, reviewing treatment recommendations, and communicating with clients under appropriate supervision.
  • Surgical and Dental Procedures: Observe and assist with surgical preparation, anesthesia, soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, dentistry, patient monitoring, and post-operative care as appropriate.
  • Clinical Procedures and Patient Care: Assist with diagnostic testing, sample collection, medication administration, treatments, patient handling, and other clinical procedures as permitted and supervised.
  • Case Discussions: Participate in daily clinical discussions, review medical cases, ask questions, and develop clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Specialized Services: Gain exposure to reproductive medicine, acupuncture, ultrasound, and other specialized services when available.
  • Hospital Operations and Technology: Become familiar with electronic medical records, veterinary practice management software, AI-assisted documentation tools, and daily clinical workflows.

Students are also expected to contribute to the overall hospital environment by assisting with appropriate patient care responsibilities, maintaining clean and organized clinical areas, following established hospital policies and safety protocols, respecting client confidentiality, and collaborating effectively with the veterinary team.

Our goal is to provide a supportive, hands-on educational experience that encourages students to develop clinical confidence, strengthen practical skills, and apply their veterinary knowledge in a real-world practice setting. The level of independence and participation will be determined by the supervising veterinarian based on the student's experience, demonstrated competencies, and applicable regulations.
