Description of Elective Experience

We will be conducting preventative medicine for 60-80 head of horses and mules in the Idaho back country.  Dental exams and floats,  vaccinations as well as lameness exams, radiographs and interarterial joint injections. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

There will be one DVM and 2 veterinary assistants. Digital radiology, Ultra sound and power float.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

This herd of animals is part of an outfitting herd.  There is no owner present.  Student will be 100% hands on.  Lameness exams,  radiographs,  ultrasound,  sterile joint prep, joint injections, dental exams,  IM and IV injections,  drug protocols, BCS of all animals.  

Student will work approximately 40-50 hours over 5 days. 

We will also be teaching ball country equine first aid to back country guides. This will include teaching proper bandaging technique.
