Mississippi State University, Pathology, MS

Description of Elective Experience

Students will spend their time here functioning as a resident would (with guidance, of course). Students will attend any scheduled rounds, read journal articles, and practice writing biopsy/ necropsy reports. Also spending mornings focusing on biopsies and afternoons participating in necropsies with our 3rd year clinical rotation students. We anticipate that students will take a necropsy case in the first week that will get presented to the group in the second week on Thursday over lunch.

You will be assigned a resident mentor per week to guide you. Additionally, you will have a chance to meet with individual pathologists to chat about careers in pathology and have any questions answered you may have.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 4 boarded anatomic pathologists on staff, and 2 boarded clinical pathologists. We also currently have 5 anatomic pathology residents. The biopsies/ necropsies performed are from in-hospital as well as outside submissions. We have a large necropsy suite with two large animal tables, a hood, and several small animal tables. We also have a large rounds presentation area with two TVs. We have a photo room for lesion photography, a dermestid beetle colony, crematoriums, and a bone collection for teaching purposes. The student will be provided their own microscope for scope work.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will be expected to be at the University from 8-5. Weekend opportunities are also available (necropsies begin at 9AM); however, this is not required as we acknowledge that exploring that city is also a valuable experience, especially if the student is considering a residency at this location.
