Full service open admission shelter. We contract with 39 municipalities to provide support for stray animals and families in need in their communities. Externs will have the opportunity to participate in high volume, high quality spay neuter for both shelter animals and public clients. They will be able to join in shelter rounds, dentistry, population management and protocol development. We also host monthly Wellness clinics for underserved communities. Student externs will work one on one with our Medical Director and also have the option to spend time in different departments such as Admissions to learn more about Shelter management and counseling owners considering surrender. The Medical Director is directly involved in behavioral health management of the shelter population as well so student externs with an interest in behavior are welcome to join these discussions as well
The shelter clinic is staffed with 3-4 full time veterinary technicians/assistants. Our clinic includes a fully equipped OR with multimonitor, isoflurane anesthesia, heated surgery tables, electrocautery and suction. We also have a dentistry suite with dental x-rays, ultrasonic scaler and power drill. We have a new digital radiology system as well.
Students are expected to work 30-35 hours a week Monday - Friday. Hours may vary by day depending on the schedule. We prefer students to be actively engaged in the work of the clinic whether it is helping support the veterinarian or seeing cases with the support of the Medical Director. Students will have opportunity to work the Medical Director doing spay and neuter surgeries on shelter animals. Additional experience in other surgical procedures will depend on case availability.
We are not able to provide housing, but can help student source a short-term rental in the area
