Miami Valley Animal Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience

We are a General Practice that focuses on wellness.  We utilize scheduled exams with some drop-off opportunities to see clients and patients.  Each doctor has a dedicated day to perform surgeries and perform dental cleanings and oral surgery.  As an AAHA accredited hospital, we utilize RVT's according to the laws of Ohio.  Outside of wellness, we often see cases requiring diagnostics in-house and send-out.  We see many of our patients through chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, Addison's, Cardiomyopathy, and more.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

3 doctor, 3 RVT, 14 total staff.  Radiology, including dental, surgical suite, Idexx in-house laboratory equiptment, minor ultrasound unit

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Open is 8am and Close is 6pm Monday - Thursday and 8pm on Friday (each doctor having a 6 hour shift).  I would expect that the student spend at least 8 - 10 hours per day (excluding Monday when she will be coming at 1pm).  Friday is a 6 hour shift for each doctor, but the student is welcome to stay more than 6 hours, if they feel it is beneficial.  The expectation is to observe and ask questions regarding how we practice.  We would also want to explore the student's wants, needs, and knowledge.  Some hands on would be appropriate as long as we have proper legal documentation.
