Description of Elective Experience

This elective externship provides students with an immersive learning experience in community-based animal welfare initiatives in Tanzania. Participants will engage in practical activities focused on treatments and care for donkeys, dogs and cats-species often neglected within local communities. Through participation in outreach programs, animal health education, and welfare improvement project, students will develop competencies in field based veterinary practices, cross- cultural communication and community engagement.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our organization is supported by experienced animal welfare professionals who supervise and mentors' externs. Students have access to tools and equipment necessary for animal care includes grooming, hoof care equipment and basic veterinary supplies which assist in treatments and surgeries. Education resources include training in animal handling and welfare assessment. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?
  • students will participate in mobile clinics to reach the local communities
  • students will participate in treatments, diagnosis and prevention of diseases
  • students will participate and assist in surgeries
  • students will participate in providing education to the farmers about animal welfare
