MedVet Phoenix, AZ

Description of Elective Experience

MedVet Phoenix is a 21,000sqft ER/Specialty Hospital in Scottsdale, AZ serving the greater Phoenix community.  Recently opened in September 2025, we currently have full-time Emergency and Critical Care (2 board-certified Criticalists and 5 ER doctors), 2 surgeons (one board-certified, one board-eligible), a board-certified medical oncologist and a board-certified cardiologist.  We have support from local board-certified radiologists and a board-certified internist for imaging and consultations.  Electives can be geared towards a specific specialty or more of a rotating experience, although our close departmental collaborations offer the ability to follow a case through workup, diagnostics, and treatment.  Our elective ECC experience ideally rotates students through day/mid/overnight rotations.  Housing/stipend is not currently offered.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our 21,000sq ft hospital houses a spacious ER and ICU, two radiology suites, four operating rooms, multiple POCUS units, Samsung ultrasound and cardiac ultrasound units, on-site CT, endoscopy (ER only), blood products, chemotherapy hood.  We are staffed 24/7 by our ECC team with surgery running Monday-Friday (with on-call overnights/weekends), Oncology and Cardiology Mon-Thursday.  Ample ECC library with on-demand online access to veterinary textbooks and journals.  Whole hospital rounds occur Monday-Friday at 8am, weekends ECC only at 8am and 8pm.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Schedule variable based on elective service and goals for the rotation.  Specialty services run Mon-Thurs 8a-6p or Monday- Friday 8a-6p.  ECC service is 24/7, with a combination of days/mids/overnights recommended.  Students are encouraged to utilize their clinical skills through client interactions, patient exams, creating treatment plans, interpreting labs and imaging, basic POCUS, etc.  Exposure to basic ER procedures may be expected.  Surgical exposure likely more limited to scrubbing in/assisting vs. primary hands-on.
