Mechanic Falls Veterinary Hospital, ME

Description of Elective Experience

An introduction to general practice medicine or continued experience learning how to use the skills learned in clinical in a real world setting. Our clinic focuses on quality medicine and quality of life care for the patient while thinking of the family as a whole. When practicing in general medicine, you will not always be able to run every diagnostic, refer patients to a specialist or operate with unlimited funds. We will help you gain confidence in what you have learned and how to rely on it in a general practice. You will gain experience with preventative medicine, internal medicine and surgery.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

You will be paired with a veterinary mentor who has over 20 years experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Our team of veterinary technicians and assistants are there to help you with every task. We have full in-house Idexx and Abaxis Labs, Digital radiology, and ultrasonography.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We are open Monday-Friday 8a-5p and your schedule is flexible to meet your goals, availability, and learning but will not exceed 40 hours per week. Depending on your comfort level, you will be able to shadow Dr. Jill Gastonguay or she will support you through appointments and surgeries.
