Mack the SNipper, FL

Description of Elective Experience

Mack the SNipper is a traveling low-cost spay/neuter team serving dogs, cats, and rats in Florida’s Okaloosa and Duval counties. Our mobile veterinary unit, the “Spayship,” allows us to serve many different locations in those counties, including local shelters and rescues, as well as the general public. On a typical day, our goal is to provide spay/neuter and wellness care for up to 30 dogs OR 60 cats, or some combination of both. Rats are less common but still beloved patients that we add to our schedule as needed.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our team is small but mighty! On a typical day, our veterinarian, Dr. Sara Mackinze, is accompanied by 2-3 vet assistants/technicians and one customer service representative. Our Spayship is fully equipped for high-volume spay/neuter with a small surgery suite, prep area, 2 isoflurane machines served by an oxygen generator, 4 small-medium kennels, two of which have a removable center divider to convert to one large kennel, and all the other little things we need for a typical surgery day.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We typically operate 4 days per week from 8am to 5pm with a 30-minute lunch break. Students initially shadow/observe our team in action, assisting as they are comfortable with our procedures. Once we are all comfortable, students are welcome to assist with and eventually lead surgery based on their capabilities, with Dr. Mackinze always present to support as needed.
