Description of Elective Experience

Shadowing with the veterinary team at a small AZA accredited zoo.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Two full time veterinarians and full keeper staff. Typical zoological medicine veterinary equipment.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student is expected to shadow Monday-Friday, with Tue-Thurs as planned major procedure days. The student will be on-call on weekends for emergencies. Hours are typically 8:30-4:30, but can vary with season, planed procedures occurring, and emergencies. The student will be expected to participate and perform exams and clinical tasks will be allowed based on demonstrated clinical competence. A 15 minute presentation on a zoo medicine topic is required.
