Description of Elective Experience

Veterinary Student Externship

At Lancaster Animal Clinic

Join our fun, collaborative 7-doctor practice for a hands-on externship experience working with dogs, cats, and exotic mammals and reptiles. Students gain exposure to both surgery and clinical medicine in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

Each extern is paired with a different doctor each day to follow the flow of appointments, develop diagnostic plans, create differentials and treatment plans, and build practical clinical skills. Students are encouraged to actively participate and gain meaningful hands-on experience while learning in a positive, mentorship-focused setting.

If you’re looking for strong clinical exposure in a welcoming, privately owned practice, we’d love to connect!

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

At Lancaster Animal Clinic, students train in a well-equipped, high-functioning 7-doctor practice with 2–3 doctors working at all times. Our hospital is staffed with approximately 2.5 technicians per doctor, along with dedicated technician appointments, room appointments, and surgery scheduled daily, ensuring a dynamic and hands-on learning environment. We are equipped with ultrasound, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, a full dental suite, therapy laser, cautery, and modern anesthesia machines. Students have access to Plumb’s Online as a clinical reference, individual Chromebooks or PCs, and a fully stocked in-house pharmacy. Our hours are Monday–Thursday 9am–7pm, Friday 9am–6pm, and Saturday 9am–1pm, providing exposure to a broad range of cases while maintaining an efficient, well-supported workflow.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student Responsibilities

Externship students are expected to actively participate in the daily workflow of the hospital during regular business hours (Monday–Thursday 9am–7pm, Friday 9am–6pm, Saturday 9am–1pm, as scheduled). Students will be paired with a veterinarian each day and are expected to engage in appointments, assist with diagnostics and treatment planning, observe and support surgical procedures, and contribute to case discussions.

Externs should be prepared to participate beyond passive shadowing — asking questions, developing differential diagnoses, proposing treatment plans, and assisting with patient care as appropriate to their skill level. Professionalism, teamwork, enthusiasm, and respect for clients, patients, and staff are expected at all times.
