Description of Elective Experience

Lake Equine Associates is an equine racetrack medicine practice located in Northfield, Ohio. The practice primarily serves Northfield Park, a Standardbred racetrack that stables several hundred horses, as well as a nearby training facility. This elective offers veterinary students the opportunity to become fully immersed in racetrack medicine while gaining hands-on experience at the track. Students may assist with a variety of  treatments. The practice also routinely performs diagnostic imaging such as radiographs and ultrasounds. Additionally, students will have the chance to experience race days and observe veterinary involvement during live racing events.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

The practice is well-equipped with portable diagnostic and therapeutic tools, including digital radiography, ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, gastroscopy, and endoscopy. As an ambulatory practice, most services are provided directly out of fully stocked veterinary trucks, allowing students to experience high-quality racetrack medicine.
