Description of Elective Experience

Kutter Pet Care Center is a small animal practice, seeing dogs, cats, and exotic pets. The student veterinarian under supervision can take part in examinations, workups, diagnostics, blood draws, catheter placement, hospital treatments, scrub in for surgeries, participate in sedated oral exams (including scaling, polishing, and dental rads), chemotherapy administration,  practice with ultrasound and radiographs.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

There are 3 full time veterinarians, with 6 experienced full time technician / veterinary assistants and 2 part time technician /veterinary assistants.  We have in house Abaxis lab machines,  an Imagyst, microscope, ultrasound, digital radiographs, etc.  All veterinarians have 10 years of practice experience or more.  Reference books are available along with VIN access.  Wifi is available for access to apps, etc.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student Responsibilities will be determined according to their experience and comfort level.  They will not be expected or allowed to perform any procedures, treatments or diagnostics without direct supervision.  The student should expect to perform a complete examination on dogs, cats, and exotic pets and be able to discuss their clinical findings with the supervising veterinarian.  They are expected to arrive at Kutter Pet Care Center at 8:00am and may stay as late as 6pm, Monday through Friday.  Saturday 8am to noon is also available.  The student's schedule can be tailored to accommodate their needs and to optimize the most rewarding experiences possible.  Kutter Pet Care Center can not always predict or determine what type of cases or the case load that will be scheduled daily.
