Description of Elective Experience

The student will observe and be taught thorough prophylactic dentistry. This will involve scaling, polishing, radiograph positioning, and simple extraction techniques.

The diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the oral cavity, will be taught.

Time will be allowed to practice surgical techniques and read.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Auckland Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery is registered with the American Veterinary Dental College as a residency site.

The practice is fully equipped to undertake all levels of dentistry from routine prophylaxis to advanced endodontics, restorations, periodontics, and oral surgery.

The practice has two dental nurses and four general nurses, along with two other veterinarians besides Dr Tucker. 

A staff lunch area is available along with staff toilets.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The daily schedule will involve consultations in the morning, followed by dental cases. Free time can be spent reading or practicing surgical procedures on cadavers.

In total, five days will be spent in the clinic between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The student will observe clinical procedures and be hands-on in prophylactic dental cases.
