This elective takes place at a mixed animal practice in Tucson, Arizona, with a focus on large animal medicine. The practice includes a large animal ambulatory service, equine surgery, and onsite ICU. Students can choose to gain experience in mixed, small, or large animal medicine based on their interests. The large animal practice is primarily equine. Throughout the week, students participate in both ambulatory practice and in the clinic, performing activities including animal restraint, medication administration, equine dentals, blood draws, IV catheter placement, minor procedures, surgical assistance, and patient care depending on the student’s experience and level of comfort. Doctors prioritize student education, encouraging questions and active learning in a supervised environment.
Student responsibilities: Students are expected to participate in ambulatory and/or clinic duties 5 days a week, with 1-2 days on call for after-hours emergencies. Responsibilities include assisting with hospital patient care under veterinary supervision, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, aiding in surgical assistance, and engaging in routine case management with veterinarians and veterinary technicians. 1-2 Tech to Doctor ratio, Equipment: DR, US, Endoscope (1.5M and 3M), Shockwave, Arthroscope/Laparoscope, In house BW.
