Iowa State University, Embryo Transfer Elective, IA

Elective clinical assignment in techniques of embryo transfer. Primary species studied will be bovine but equine and small ruminant embryo transfer will be covered during discussions. Enrollment is limited to four students per two week session. Biosecurity: All students must follow current College policies regarding animal contact following foreign travel.

Required Supplies:

Professional surgical scrub attire (see attire section)

Clean white laboratory coat

Closed toed shoes; recommend a dedicated pair of shoes for surgery

Thermometer

Stethoscope

Pen light

Bandage scissors

Pen (black or blue ink)

Attire:  The requirements match those in the teaching hospital (large and small animal)

• Surgical caps
  • cloth caps will be allowed in the surgery lab if they are able to cover all your hair
  • caps need to be able to cover your ears if applicable (see below)
  • caps may not have any offensive subject matter, or you will be asked to remove them
  • Disposable caps will also be provided
• Surgical scrubs
  • shirt must be easily tucked into bottoms
  • nothing should be stored in the pockets (surgeon or assistant surgeon)
• Earrings
  • no earrings that dangle
  • stud-type earrings allowed if one wears a bouffant style surgical cap that covers the entire lobe of the ear
• Nose rings are allowed if can be covered by a mask; any other facial jewelry must be removed
• Nail polish
  • must be removed
• Nails
  • need to be trimmed short (2 mm or less)
• No cell phones attached (surgeon or assistant surgeon)
• No other jewelry (necklaces, rings, etc.)

Laboratory sessions Wednesday 7:30 am until finished (approx. 12 pm),
junior surgery lab area; groups will be expected to premed for
anesthesia at 8:00 am
