Iowa Select Farms (Iowa Falls, IA)

Description of Elective Experience

Iowa Select Farms is the 4th largest pork producer in the United States. The student will spend their time with various veterinarians throughout the system, as well as spend time with other support departments to learn what is involved in producing pork. The student will be hands on during farm visits, necropsies, sample submission, understanding vaccination and treatment protocols, participate in decision making, and follow-up on cases. In addition they will have the opportunity to spend time with other support departments as fits their interest, this could include: Health and Care Assurance, Transportation, Nutrition, Nutrient Management, Production, Supply Chain, and others.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Iowa Select Farms consists of a wide variety of breed-to wean sites, wean-to-market sites, internal laboratories, and truck washes. The student will have an opportunity to interact with these sites and departments to help them better understand the system.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be available Monday-Friday typically starting between 6-8AM and ending 3-5PM. They will primarily be shadowing veterinarians but may have the ability to conduct a site visit on their own as experience and knowledge level allows.
